Subject: Help Bhuwani- urgent

 Dear Friends,

We are writing to you in regards to a young Nepali man named Bhuwani who urgently needs your help. Bhuwani is from a very poor family in a remote village near Pokhara.  He recently came to the US through the DV lottery and was working. After several months he started behaving more and more strangely, because he is suffering greatly from mental illness. For instance, he had terrifying hallucinations including that his mother’s house was on fire in Nepal and that a person was trying to kill him causing him to jump out of a window. He has lost all of his money, passport, greencard, and social security card due to his illness. It has caused him to be involuntarily hospitalized twice.

Luckily he is currently under very competent and compassionate care at the UCLA Harbor Medical Center.  California has very strict criteria of whom they can hold under psychiatric care, and Bhuwani has fit these criteria, which is just to say that he is suffering very much – he is very sick. Some of us met with Bhuwani and his doctor not too long ago. However, Bhuwani’s doctor does think that his prognosis is good, that is, he has a chance of recovery under the right circumstances. The doctor also thinks that Bhuwani’s best chance for recovery is in Nepal, not here, so we are all working together to help him get back home. The hospital here will help us to make sure that he is protected during his travel back to Nepal.

FON, LA is working to help find him psychiatric care in Nepal. However, according to his doctor here, Bhuwani will need to take medication under the supervision of a psychiatrist for many years to come.  Bhuwani’s family is in no situation to help him with this, so he is counting on us to fill that role. This need is URGENT as he will be released from the hospital in 7 to 10 days (between Sept. 1 and 7). We have managed to get the hospital to help him send him home with an escort so that he doesn’t get into any trouble on the plane, but he still needs our help.

What Bhuwani needs right now is some financial help with:
1)
      getting back home and
2)      continuing his care/recovery in Nepal

If you would like to help Bhuwani financially, please send a check made out to Friends of Nepal, Los Angeles with “Bhuwani fund” written in the memo section (next to where you sign the check) to the following address:
