ANA Musical Night – Competitive Music Performance

The 25th ANA-FON convention will be held in beautiful sunny Southern California at the premier Westin hotel from Fri June 29 to Sun July 1st , 2007. The convention organizing team is putting together two nights of fantastic entertainment for the attendees. The first night's program will be held on June 30 th and the organizing team is soliciting participation for that night from all over the Americas . Here are the guidelines for submitting an application to participate in the cultural program.

The program duration will be of 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes. It will consist of 5-6 competing musical groups and 7-8 dance or skit performances. Dances and skits will be used to fill in between the transition of musical groups.

ANA is establishing this platform to nourish creativity, establish healthy competitive environment and encourage constructive atmosphere. The main purpose of this effort, however, is to preserve and promote underlying Nepali sentiments within each of us.

This year the emphasis is on musical performances. So the musical performances are competitive and have monetary awards associated with them. Next year, we can consider monetary awards on group dances and so on.

Each participating team will be selected by the ANA Cultural Committee. The evaluation will be based on the selection criteria formulated by the committee.

Following are the guidelines for the program.

1. 5-6 musical groups will be competing for the first and second place prizes.

2. 7-8 other group performances (which include dances and skits) will serve as supplementary performances and will not be a part of the competitive performances. These performances will be scheduled between the transitions of competing musical performances.

3. Group performances will be preferred against solo performances whether they are competitive or non-competitive performances. There is a minimum requirement of 4 members in a group but the team shall not exceed 8 members. This rule is strictly applicable to the competitive performances.

4. Group must submit a video of their performance by April 10, 2007. The video maybe a home video and quality of the video will not be part of the judging criteria. However, only point of caution is that inferior video quality may adversely portray the performance, therefore increasing the chances of elimination for the group from the selection process.

5. Selection of the performing groups will be based on the evaluation of the video provided by the team. Selection will be disqualified if the participating members on the final show differ from the members performing on the video. Decision of the selection committee will be final. This rule is strictly applicable to competitive performances.

6. Members of the group must be clearly defined. Submission form for each of the performer shall also be submitted while submitting the video.

7. Registration fee of $150 must be submitted along with the video submission. Failure to submit $150 will automatically disqualify the team from entering the competition. This fee is a deposit and will be refundable.

8. Songs shall be in ethnic Nepali languages and shall not exceed 5 minutes. Points will be deducted during the competitive performance if a song exceeds 5 minutes.

9. Musical groups will be allowed to perform 2 songs. First song shall be the song that is reflective to the musical group. Lyrics for the second song will be provided by the Organizing Committee by May 15, 2007. Music and arrangements for the second song shall be musical groups' responsibility.

10. Team member of a group shall not be a part of another group.

11. Monetary prize of $1000 and $500 will be awarded to the groups with the highest and the second highest points respectively. Again this is applicable only to musical groups this year.

12. Certificates will be distributed to all performers.

13. Selection committee will determine the panel of judges. Judges will consist of diverse members of the community.

14. Performing team members must register when they arrive at the ANA convention. Admission fee to the cultural program (of the night) will be waived for the performing team members. Group managers and assisting members are not considered to be part of the performing team.

15. Program timeline will be the discretion of the Cultural Committee.
