Nepali New Year 2064
New Year

In Nepal the Bikram-Sambat calendar is observed, which is a solar calendar started by King Bikramditya. The Nepalese New Year falls in mid-April. This New Year 2064 of the Bikram Sambat corresponds to the year 2007-2008 and fell on April 14, 2007.

New Year's Day is an official holiday in Nepal. In Nepal as in all countries, New Year is celebrated in different ways. On this day, Nepalis visit the Pashupatinath temple to take a bath in the holy Bagmati River. Pilgrims also visit other religious spots and shrines to start a new life from that day and vow not to repeat their bad karma. People go for picnics and outdoor sports too. On New Years Day, they wear new clothes and get good food to eat and participate in illuminated bustling meals (fairs) to celebrate the New Year. It is a day to seek blessings from the family priest and one's elders as well. Nepalese people hope that the New Year will bring joy and happiness to their lives.

NAFCA celebrated Nepali New Year 2064 Bikram Sambat on April 14, 2006 at Davis Veteran Center. There were many activities and a diversity of Nepali cultural dances, songs, musical performances, and poetry recitation by our local talented artists and children. Among the dancers who performed in a NAFCA New Year 2064 Celebration were some professional dancers: Shanti Tamang, Sabina Dhakal, Aaditya Subedi, and Prajwal Bajracharya, who have performed to large anticipating audiences in many shows in and around Nepal. There were indoor activities/games followed by a delicious authentic Nepali dinner, the appetizers and dinner were catered by Kathmandu Kitchen. During the New Year program we also presented various awards and Certificates to distinguished personalities for their outstanding contribution to the organization and community as well. The New Year's event ended with prizes for the indoor activities/games winners, and awards to all the cultural program participants. After which everyone put on their dancing shoes to the sounds of DJ music by Sanjay Dev and celebrated the beginning of the Happy New Year 2064.

There were 117 paid adult participants and the total head count was about 200. This year both the 93rd Annual Picnic Day Parade and Nepali New Year 2064 programs fell on the same day. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain on Saturday morning the outdoor activities had to be cancelled. However, the soggy weather didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the attendees. Despite the wet weather, some folks came from as far away as the Bay-Area and Modesto to join the New Year 2064 Celebration.
